Middleton Outreach Ministry (MOM) received its largest donation ever from a single company last week when Roundy's Foundation dropped off 14,144 pounds of food valued at $10,270 at its Montclaire Drive food pantry. Roundy's also donated a check for $5000.
The groceries should be enough to feed struggling local families for nearly a month.
MOM's relationship with Roundy's, the company behind grocery stores like Copps and Pick 'n Save, started in 2005 when a MOM food pantry coordinator met Roundy's Connie Jones. Roundy's is currently donating 281,000 pounds of groceries to food pantries throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Two years ago, the foundation gave MOM a $5000 check and food valued at $5000. This year, more than twice as much arrived, taking a team of volunteers and workers from MOM and Roundy's over an hour to unload.
The food, including canned vegetables and fruit, cereal, rice, jelly and baking ingredients, comes at a perfect time, according to MOM Distribution Center manager Kim Grafenauer.
"February and March tend to be a slow time for donation with us, along with mid-summer," she said. MOM's food pantry currently distributes $16,000 worth of food to 300 families every month. "Today's donation will come close to feeding our families for a month," observed MOM Executive Director Dietrich Gruen.
"Sometimes school kids have trouble visualizing what so many pounds of food looks like, so I always tell them that's about one-and-a-half school buses," Grafenauer said.
